John Christopher (aka Samuel Youd)
Tripod Trilogy -
The White Mountains, The City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire
I still have my set from 5th grade and recently read it to my son who is turning six. He enjoyed it tremendously. A guest saw the books on our table and excitedly stated that he had also read them in grade school. The style is simple. The pace is quick. The storytelling is superb.
Robert Heinlein - Tunnel in the Sky
This is another book I read as a teen. I liked the premise. Although it turns into a mess towards the end the first half is a fantastic adventure.
Nikos Kazantakis - Freedom or Death
I read this in my late teens and it became one of the few books that I have read more than once. The severity of the characters and the intense pressure that the community is under comes to a gruesome head. It has my absolute favorite last line.
Homer - The Iliad
This book literally provides hours of enjoyment. It's long. The prose is difficult. The battles are epic. The struggles relentless. I've read it three times.
Ernest Hemingway - The Old Man and The Sea
There is something almost omniscient in the short sentences and bold images. No other adult book speaks to me on such powerful and singular terms.
Iris Vinton - Look Out for Pirates
This is a picture book for kids. The story transcends age, though. And the illustrations by H.B. Vestal are excellent. I am a guest reader at the local kindergarten and when I pull out this book the kids go wild.
